'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Barnsley 2 - Brighton & Hove Albion 1

Oakwell

12th of March at 19.45

Attendance: 7,869 .

3 Vital Survival Points

Luke Steele Saved a second half penalty to ensure Barnsley Moved out of the bottom 3.

Jason Scotland had put Barnsley ahead when he latched onto a flick on from O`Grady.
Brighton levelled with a rare shot from distance.

Barnsley were then awarded a penalty for a pull in the box. Chris Dagnall slammed home the penalty to give the reds a 2-1 lead.

The referee who had a poor game throughout then awarded the visitors a penalty when it looked a blatant dive, justice was done as Steele saved the penalty.

Barnsley then battled through the last 10 minutes as they had through the previous 80. Kelvin Etuhu led the midfield and his determination outlined what the performance was about.

Star Player

Kelvin Etuhu
Bossed the midfield battle and showed exactly what we were about on the night. Etuhu was essential to stopping Brighton playing. Was that Kelvin Etuhu or did we bring Yaya Toure Back from the Etihad? Brilliant

Player Ratings

Steele

Great second half saves and a penalty save which could just keep us in the Championship.
Rating 9

Wiseman

Steady thoughout, mistake in the second half but all in all a steady and composed performance.
Rating 7

Cranie

Lead the back line and along with Delap were crucial in the way which we defended.
Rating 8

Kennedy

Quiet on the left. Went about his work and contributed more in the defence than attack.
Rating 7

Delap

Old Manned Them! Thats the term that springs to mind, the old head along with the determination was the attributes to a great performance.
Rating 8

O'Brien

Ran his socks off. Giving Albion no time on the ball. I have seen better O'Brien performances.
Rating 7

Perkins

Much improved from saturday. Perks was given MOM in the ground.
Rating 8

Mellis

Glad to see Mellis start. The impact was not what it has been from the bench. However he is our most attack minded Midfielder.
Rating 7

Scotland

Worked well and got the goal. The legs have gone but he knows where the goal is without doubt.
Rating 7

Etuhu

Amazing. Bossed the midfield and its a credit to Flicker for instilling the confidence in Kelvin to keep bouncing back. I am sure if/when Flicker reads this he will agree!
Rating 9

O'Grady

Gave it everything and won his fair share in the air. Touch let him down on occasions.
Rating 7

Hassell

Came on with 10 minutes to go, great to see him back. Personally thought the back 4 had better balance before he came on.
Rating 7

Cywka

Ran alot and gives us a different option. Had the chance to go in the corner late on and went for goal.
Rating 6

Dagnall

Touch was lacking. The fact he stuck the penalty away gives him a 7.
Rating 7

Manager Rating

The starting line up and plan A was correct for the first time in a few games. The players played for the boss and gave it everything. Credit where credit is due.
Rating 8

Opponent Rating

After Match comments concern me. Gus you were not the better side. You had a better brand of football but if you look at the top of this page you will see the score and that counts. Maybe your diving continental stars dont like it up north on a cold night.

David Flitcroft

Told the BBC 'I am very proud, we have set a team up to battle and they have done that in the first half.

'I have got massive respect for Brighton in terms of the football they play. I am a massive Brighton fan in terms of that. We got schooled down there earlier in the season and that was one of the worst trips I have had.

'But I am delighted because the game plan we set out has worked. We didn't let them play with any freedom or fluidity and I don't think any of their players would have enjoyed playing here.'

Well said Chief, Great result last night, but disappointing crowd (lowest so far). Every point is vital from here on, so lets hope the players can be confident, all sides are beatable in this league, but the lads have got to be at their best for every game now, the end of the season is certainly going to be interesting...if nothing else. Regarding the Brighton penalty, usually justice is done when a penalty is given, but should never have been!
Engleberthumbertyke
Agree with what you say. I was especially dissapointed with the crowd - we had almost as many as Man City and could have taken more. Where are the fans when we need them? It will certainly be interesting that's for sure. Anyone noticed a lack of comments from Tony when we win?
