The South Yorkshire derby ended in defeat for Barnsley as Wednesday managed to end a run of seven straight defeats with a controversial winner.
Both sides started nervously as could be expected in a local derby and with both teams in poor form and fighting to avoid the drop at this early stage of the season.
On 11 minutes Dawson tested Kirkland with a 25 yarder after Davies had teed him up. Kirkland (the biggest time wasting goalkeeper I`ve ever seen at Oakwell) managed to palm the ball away to his right.
The atmosphere came alive as Foster found himself in the referee`s book. It was a challenge to get a derby crowd going but replays show that some refs may have opted for a red card rather than a yellow.
With the ball already out of play Foster clattered into his man with an over the ball challenge. The reds defender didn`t make contact with his foot and just caught the Wednesday forward with his leg on the follow through which probably saved him from a red.
Foster is not a malicious player but the opposition feel that this particular challenge was made with malice. Foster has rubbished such allegations and apologised on twitter.
On 18 minutes Davies found a deflected shot fall into his path but the striker saw his shot deflect wide for a corner.
Cywka found himself in a good position after a neat through ball from Buzsaky. Cywka could only slice is shot wide which is typical of the form he has been in for the last couple of months and again he was poor on Saturday after a good start to the season.
On 35 minutes came the opening goal for Sheffield Wednesday. Buxton sent in a deep cross which Steele came to claim. From my view the keeper seemed to drop the ball and O`Grady has on hand to give Wednesday the lead.
In the post-match interview Wednesday forward Madine admitted crashing into Steele and causing him to drop the ball. From the TV replay this is clear and the referee had a good view of the incident but seemed to be focusing on the man challenging for the ball and not the impact from Madine on Steele.
Whilst on the subject of the referee, he is as bad as any I have ever seen in my time watching football. Almost every decision was terrible. And I`m not moaning saying the decisions were against Barnsley, he was equally as bad for both teams. He wouldn`t be allowed to ref in the Sunday league with a performance like that.
The reds responded after the goals as Tudgay blazed a free header over the bar. That was the one clear cut chance that should have been put away. Tudgay has missed a few good chances in his short time with the reds. He gets himself in great positions but he doesn`t seem to be the goal scorer that we are so desperate for to help Davies who is hardly prolific himself if you take away the Birmingham game.
The second half game and David Perkins replaced Buzsaky and was instrumental in everything that reds did.
He quickly found Tudgay who fed Davies who could only blaze over the bar with his shot.
Tudgay then won a free kick which Davies struck only for Kirkland to make a decent save.
The reds then made another change as O`Brien entered the stage in place of the disappointing Cywka.
Barnsley had a shout for a penalty has Davies appeared to be pulled down but the referee said no.
At this point the reds were camped in the Wednesday half and putting them under enormous pressure. It was more huffing and puffing than clear cut chances and Hill decided to go three up top and introduced Harewood in place of Greening.
Perkins then had a decent strike that went just wide of Kirkland`s right hand post. Foster had an effort cleared off the line from an O`Brien corner.
Harewood had a couple of chances and Davies hit one straight at Kirkalnd but for all of the possession and attacking play that Barnsley had in the second half you never thought that they would score.
68% possession in the second half, 20 shots and probably only one clear cut chance. There are certainly problems that need addressing.
You couldn`t fault the players` efforts one bit during the game it just wasn`t to be.
Perkins and O`Brien gave Barnsley the extra energy and impetus when they came on and for me have both got to start the next match.
