Barnsley vs. Brighton

Oakwell

Tuesday 12th March 2013

Barnsley v Brighton

Barnsley are back to league action and their relegation dog fight when they entertain Brighton at Oakwell.

Hopefully the 5 - 0 thrashing at Man City will not drain the reds players of any confidence they have gained during the Flicker reign.

Barnsley now have 11 cup finals to play in their bid for Championship survival.

Of those 11 games the reds will face the top seven in the league as well as away trips to local rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield.

The run in is tough but I still believe we can do it and urge the fans to get behind the team.

Football has become a very fickle game over recent years. Many fans are now saying Flicker hasn`t got a clue. These very same fans were praising him as the clubs saviour only a couple of weeks ago.

I do believe that Flicker has made a few errors in team selection recently but this is largely down to the players we have lost and him trying to figure out the right system and personnel to put in that system.

Admittedly time is a luxury we don`t have but Flicker is young and learning and I believe he will get it right.

He`s not afraid to admit when he has got it wrong and this will help him learn and progress as a manager and hopefully it will begin with pulling off the miracle of survival. Let`s remember how it looked when he took over. He has given us a fighting chance. What more could he have done?

Barnsley Team News:

Stephen Dawson could return to the squad which is a major boost as we have missed him badly recently.

O`Brien, Mellis and Delap are all pushing for recalls and I expect at least two of them to be in the starting eleven. Surely Mellis is a must after recent displays.

This is the team I think Flicker will pick:

GK Steele
RB Wiseman
CB Foster
CB Cranie
LB Kennedy
RM O`Brien
CM Tunnicliffe
CM Perkins
LM Mellis
ST Dagnall
ST O`Grady

Subs
Alnwick/Lid
Hassell
Delap
Dawson
Cywka
Harewood
Scotland

I myself prefer the Harewood/Dagnall partnership from the start but after listening to Flicker recently I get the impression that O`Grady will be starting.

Player to watch: Mellis

Much improved recently. When he is on form he can unlock defences and hopefully we will see that tonight.

Brighton Team News:

Brighton have a striker crisis with Ashley Barnes suspended for at least four games.

Craig Mackail-Smith is out with an Achilles injury and Will Hoskins has a knee problem.

Leonardo Ulloa is the only recognised striker available.

Player to watch: Wayne Bridge

Is the former England international still a Premier League performer?

Match Facts & Stats

Brighton lead the head to head stats with 13 wins to the reds 12.

Brighton are searching for their first double over Barnsley for 21 years.

The reds have lost only one of their last 12 home games against Brighton.

Barnsley fell back to the bottom of the table on Saturday just before taking to the field against Man City in the FA cup.

Barnsley haven`t won in four games in all competitions and have conceded 5 goals in two of those games.

Barnsley will make history in this game and become the first team to play 3,000 games in the second tier. The record to date reads won - 1,028, drawn - 747, lost - 1,224.

Barnsley have the fewest home goals of any Championship club with 18 goals from 17 games.

However the reds current run of scoring in 13 consecutive league games is the best in the division.

If Flicker goes with your team I see a 2-1 home win. If O'Grady plays or we play 3-5-2 then we will only get a point! Sorry but realistic.

i think the 4-4-2 is a fair shout, Mellis must play !!.you mention the run in but i wouldnt have bet on either huddersfield or wednesday to get their results of late.if we are up for it then it doesnt matter who they are.not many man c in this division and we can pass it as good as anyone on our day. hope for a 1-0 if we can get to 20 mins without conceding.

I reckon Brighton will have too much for us and the Man City defeat will have got to the players.

Agreed Mellis has to play surely. Flicker himself has admitted selection errors in recent games, I believe/hope he will get it right today.

Great result last night, but disappointing crowd (lowest so far). Every point is vital from here on, so lets hope the players can be confident, all sides are beatable in this league, but the lads have got to be at their best for every game now, the end of the season is certainly going to be interesting (if nothing else).

Crowd very dissapointing. What will it take to get bums back on seats at Oakwell?
