Midfielder & Forward Arrive

Midfielder & Forward Arrive

Ahead of the Championship meeting with Ipswich this afternoon, Barnsley have confirmed the loan arrival of Harvey Barnes from Leicester and the permanent signing of Dijon forward Mamadou Thiam.

Barnes, who had a spell at MK Dons in League One last season, has dropped down to the Championship from the Premier League, but also up a level from last term, on a season-long deal.

The midfielder, 19, has made one first team appearance for Leicester when he came off the bench in a Champions League defeat against Porto last November.

Commenting on his arrival Paul Heckingbottom told the Official Website: 'Harvey is a really talented young player and we are excited to see him come to Oakwell. I am really thankful to Craig Shakespeare and his team at Leicester for allowing him to join us on loan. Once Harvey knew we were interested and we had a chat, he knew he wanted to come here to further develop himself following a really impressive run of games over the last year and I want to see him now continue that with us.'

Barnes enjoyed his experience in League One last season but is obviously pleased to step up into the Championship, a test he's ready for and felt was needed to help career progression.

He added: 'I'm delighted to get it done and I can't wait to start. I got some really good experience out on loan last season and certainly learnt a few different things so this is now a perfect next step to come into the Championship and test myself. I feel I have began well in my step-up from youth football and I need to keep working hard now to progress further.'

Meanwhile, an undisclosed fee saw Barnsley secure the signature of Thiam, 22, from French Ligue 1 club Dijon.

The Senegal international forward, who can play as an out and our striker or on either flank, impressed last season scoring nine goals in 38 games during a loan at Clermont.

Heckingbottom told the Official Website: 'Mamadou is exactly the type of striker we`ve been looking for in this window and I am really pleased we could secure the deal. He`s a pacey, powerful striker who can use both feet and play in different systems, which gives us options and much-needed versatility. He`s different to what we already have at the Club and I look forward to working with him now.'
