Barnsley Will Get Better... We Have To

Paul Heckingbottom, whilst disappointed by the 3-1 opening day defeat at Bristol City, hasn't got too carried away.

However, the Barnsley boss knows the Reds WILL have to improve.

After been denied by the crossbar, as Bristol City had too, Bobby Reid put the Robins ahead. The home sides' club record signing Famara Diedhiou marked his debut with the second and the hosts, of course under former Reds boss Lee Johnson, wrapped up the points ahead of the break when Reid scored again.

The travelling fans had something to cheer when Ryan Hedges pulled back a late consolation but Barnsley suffered a fifth successive league opener in a row.

Barnsley's chances weren't helped by the absence of summer signings Lloyd Isgrove, Liam Lindsay and Zeki Fryers but as well as he thought the Reds started, with little in it, Heckingbottom admitted the first goal made the difference as did the Tykes' defending.

He told the Official Website: 'There was nothing in it at the start. They've hit the bar, great save by Davo (Adam Davies) but then we've hit the bar ourselves but the turning point was obviously the first goal. From then on, that was what's fundamentally wrong from us today in the game, especially looking at the goals. Dealing with the long ball - they got in twice with that same ball. Then not stopping the cross, and the third goal letting them come inside, which is a big, big thing that we don't want.'

An improved second half gave Heckingbottom a positive to look at but the boss knows improvement, he feels being seen during pre-season and as that game went on, is needed, if that doesn't happen the Reds could be in for a tough Championship season.

Hecky added: 'But we know where we're at. It is tough to take but we know where we want to be and how hard we'll have to work to get there. We were much better second half, we grew into the game and we've got a goal at the end. So we're going to get better. We have to. The Championship is unforgiving.'
