Hassell Fears for Future

Barnsley legend Bobby Hassell fears that this could be his last season with the reds after only starting six games during the current campaign.

Hassell is the clubs current longest-serving player with more than 250 appearances since signing for the reds in 2004.

He is out of contract in the summer and isn`t expecting the club to offer him a new deal.

Hassell speaking to the star had this to say 'One thing`s for sure, if I`m called upon I`ll go out there and give it my all. I love pulling on the Barnsley shirt and have always given my best for the club. I`ve hardly started any games this season though. Maybe I have played my last game but I hope not. If I`m not playing I`d love to stay involved in a coaching role - and hopefully finish my career here. To go out like this would be really sad but I`m not looking for sympathy. Whatever happens I`ll be fine in life. I`ve got no qualms with anybody or any axe to grind. All I want to do is play for the club and try and keep us in this division. I`d be devastated if we got relegated. I`ve still got something to offer. I can definitely contribute a lot.

From the fans point of view and my own everyone would love to see Bobby given another year to make it ten years and get his testimonial.

From the clubs point of view can they afford another year of wages for a player who won`t be in the manager`s plans just because he`s been a good servant to the club?

I was interested to hear his comments that he would be willing to stay on in a coaching role if he wasn`t going to play much.

It would be good to see a player like Hassell who has been at the club for such a long time, begin his coaching experience with Barnsley and possibly one day in the future develop in to the manager.

However isn`t he still a bit young to go in to what you would call semi-retirement and concentrate on coaching?

Ok he isn`t getting any younger and but I`m sure most League One clubs would still want him as a first team regular.

It`s a dilemma for the club and one for Bobby himself as he clearly does love being at Barnsley.

Let`s have the fans views on the best solution for all concerned.
