Barnsley`s number one target Sean O`Driscoll turned down the opportunity to become the new manager due to the clubs lack of ambition.
O`Driscoll is a manager who is used to working on a budget and likes the challenge and sense of achievement he gets working at the smaller clubs such as Barnsley.
Of course he would prefer a job such as the Wolves one which has now gone to Dean Saunders but he is the kind of manager who would usually accept the next best offer if it was right.
Take with a pinch of salt what O`Driscoll says about the timing not being right. The only reason he doesn`t want to be Barnsley manager is because the club have no ambition what so ever and anyone taking over will end up with a big black mark on their CV.
If a manager such as O`Driscoll who has worked in the lower leagues and recently accepted a position at Crawley feels that we don`t have any ambition then who can the club hope to attract?
My worry now is that a cheap, no experience appointment will come in and there is little hope going forward.
Barnsley now have 4 names still on their shortlist but will any of them want to come? Especially knowing they were not first choice.
Two of them are Gary Megson and Kevin Blackwell and I hear that Inverness manager Terry Butcher is the third.
I believe Barnsley sacked Keith Hill when O`Driscoll became available as they thought he would take the job. I now see a situation where we could be up the creek without a paddle and no new manager in place for the Leeds game.
If that is the case I hear that academy manager Ronnie Branson will take charge of that one with Flicker set to be relieved of his duties this week.
