No Place for Mellis
Barnsley playmaker Jacob Mellis has been left out of the Barnsley squad taking on Hull City at the KC stadium.
I`m sure there will be some rumours about an injury problem coming from the club but I believe that he has been dropped and rightly so whether we win, lose or draw today.
Hill stated yesterday that only players injured were Digby and Davies, so unless some warm up injury has occurred then Hill has done what I was calling for after last week`s defeat to Nottingham Forest.
Mellis has undoubted talent and is probably the most talented player by some way in the Barnsley squad. Talent alone however is not enough when you clearly have effort and attitude problems that this lad has when he is on the field.
Mellis showed both sides to his game last week. A sublime pass for Harewood`s goal. The rest of the game being laziness personified and acting like a child who couldn`t get his own way.
The negative aspects of Mellis` game have been a lot more apparent in the last few games than in the earlier part of the season.
Barnsley need Mellis to be on song as he is a vital cog in most things good that Barnsley produce.
In recent weeks his effort has been virtually none existent. He is not willing to track back when we lose the ball and quite often it is his man who gets away to create a goal scoring opportunity.
When things aren`t going our way and we are losing or a team are on top then he doesn`t want to know. He visibly goes in to a sulk and puts his head down in frustration and is unwilling to fight for the team in the way many of his team mates are.
Perkins and Dawson clearly don`t have the natural ability of Mellis but I know who I`d rather have in my team at the minute. You know what you get from Perkins and Dawson and that they will always give 100 per cent. I`m not sure Mellis has given 50 per cent the last few games.
Mellis needs to sort his head out or he could be a talent wasted. After all there is a reason that someone with his potential and talent is at Barnsley and had to come to Barnsley due to a lack of other options following being thrown out of Chelsea.
I remember a few Barnsley fans this time last year getting on at the effort the Jacob Butterfield put in for Barnsley.
I can safely say that it was four times the effort that Mellis is putting in at the moment and Butterfield was playing better and a lot more productive too.
I do like Mellis and don`t really like getting on at Barnsley players as it serves no real purpose but when a player is not trying it needs sorting and I hope Hill can get Mellis performing again and the player himself can sort out his self destructive mentality.
