Steeley Display Not Enough For Barnsley

An outstanding performance from Barnsley 'keeper Luke Steele was not enough to see the Tykes through to the Fourth Round of the F.A. Cup.

Mark Robins named an unchanged side from the one that defeated Coventry City at Oakwell on Monday, whereas Avram Grant rang the changes in his West Ham side, with 8 players dropped after the 5-0 defeat at Newcastle United.

The gulf in class was evident throughout the game with Barnsley never really getting a proper foothold on the match. It was only for Luke Steele's incredible goalkeeping the the Hammers were not 4-0 up at half time.

Jonathan Spector did give the Hammers the lead however in the 29th minute with a good finish from close range.

In the second half, Barnsley enjoyed much more possession without ever really testing Rob Green in the Hammer's goal.

The Reds had a massive penalty shout waved away late on when substitute Jacob Butterfield was brought down in the box but an equaliser wasn't to be found.

Adam Hammill smacked the crossbar with a deflected shot in the dying seconds as Barnsley pressed for an equaliser, but West Ham's Freddie Piquionne took the ball straight down the other end before finishing past a despairing Steele to put the result beyond any doubt and the Hammers through to Round Four.

All in all, it was a much better performance from Barnsley when compared with their last visit to Upton Park and Luke Steele has done himself proud with his display but the cup dream dies for another year.
