On This Day...Barnsley 0 Chelsea 6

It's 13 years ago today that Barnsley received their first real taste of life in the Premier League.

After a fairytale start against West Ham in their first game was crushed with 2 second half goals and a battling 1-0 victory at fellow new boys Crystal Palace, the Reds faced Chelsea at Oakwell.

Barnsley enjoyed a lot of posession in the opening stages as the teams began to feel each other out but 25 minutes in, the onslaught began. Dan Petrescu gave the Londonders the lead before Gus Poyet doubled the Tykes misery.

It then became the Gianluca Vialli show, as the Italian set about making a point to manager Ruud Gullit with four goals. One goal just before half-time sent the Tykes in 3-0 down and a second half hat trick from Vialli doubled their lead with almost 10 minutes to spare.

The Barnsley supporters spirits weren't to be dampened in the August sunshine however, as we ironically sang 'We're gonna win 6-5' and then 'We're gonna win 7-6' to the tune of our own tongue in cheek terrace song 'It's Just Like Watching Brazil'. It was, but they were in blue that day.
