Bennett Before Boulding
Saturday's team sheet made interesting reading for Barnsley supporters. The list of substitutes included fresh academy graduate Steven Bennett.
The 19 year-old striker travelled with the first team to Ashton Gate for the Tykes' 3-3 draw with Bristol City.
There was however no place in the 18 for Michael Boulding. The 34 year old attacker returned to Barnsley this summer on a 'play for free' basis, in an attempt to earn a contract.
It divided opinion within the Barnsley faithful with some admiring the gesture and willing Robins to give him a chance and others wondering how a player who isn't good enough to stay at Bradford City, can earn a deal at a Championship club.
The fact that Robins chose to give a 19 year old academy graduate the nod over Boulding, begs the question of whether Boulding is indeed flogging a dead horse. The gesture to play for free is certainly honourable but perhaps he ought to set his sights a little lower. He looked certain to be offered a deal at Mansfield Town but turned his back on them for this opportunity at Barnsley. I'm just not sure it was his best decision.
