Reports that suggest Barnsley are about to sign Birmingham striker Kevin Phillips are totally unfounded.
Certain websites have been listing the veteran hitman as a primary target for Barnsley boss Mark Robins, but have no true basis whatsoever.
Phillips, who has spent most of his career playing in the Premier League, would demand wages that are way out of our capability as a relatively small Championship club. Even if we could pick him up on a free, we still couldn't afford to pay the man.
It's true that Mark Robins is looking for quality strikers to add to his squad this summer, but as the transfer market plods along slowly, rumours are becoming ever more stratospheric in their imagination.
If we managed to bring in Kevin Phillips, it would do wonders for season ticket sales, but we don't have enough seats in the ground to meet his wages.
He's a player who can still do a job in the Premier League in my opinion and therefore why would he settle for a Championship struggler club, when he can pick up Premier League wages as he edges closer to retirement?
