They are often referred to by the Oakwell faithful as the 'Barnsley B Team', because Scunthorpe United have no less than three ex-Barnsley players.
The nickname was once befitting of the now Premier League club Wigan Athletic who, at one point had picked up three of Barnsley's promotion winning side of 1997 in the shape of Neil Redfearn, Andy Liddell and Arjan De Zeeuw.
Paul Hayes was a promotion winner with the Reds himself, scoring important goals in the Play-Offs against Huddersfield Town and Swansea City to send the Reds back to the Championship in 2006 before returning to his former club Scunthorpe United. Hayes made 88 appearances for the Reds in two seasons scoring eighteen goals including one against The Iron in a 2-1 defeat at Glanford Park.
Grant McCann also scored against the Iron for the Reds, in a dramatic 2-2 draw at Glanford Park. The Northern Irish midfielder joined the Reds in 2006 from Cheltenham Town making 44 appearances over two seasons, scoring 4 goals.
Sam Togwell also spent two seasons at Oakwell and left alongside McCann in the summer of 2008. He was part of the side that famously beat Chelsea in the F.A. Cup in 2008 and made 73 appearances for Barnsley, scoring twice.
McCann will not be available for selection for the game against the Reds after his sending off against WBA.
