Kings of Leon - Diego Released

Barnsley Football Club have confirmed that Spanish midfielder Diego Leon can leave Oakwell when his contract expires in June.

The former Real Madrid playmaker will not be offered a new deal in South Yorkshire after failing to cement a regular place in the Reds` starting XI.

Both of the midfielder`s goals for the Tykes came against Lancashire opposition. His first a wonderful twenty-five yard free-kick against Preston North End at Deepdale in a 2-1 win for Davey`s men. The second was a deflected effort against Burnley in front of the Sky cameras at Oakwell in November - helping the Reds to a 3-2 win.

Arriving from Grasshopper Zurich in January 2008, Leon has since made 42 appearances for Barnsley. The best of the 25-year-old`s performances came at Upton Park in the Reds` 3-0 defeat to West Ham United. Despite Barnsley losing their FA Cup tie, the Spaniard bossed the midfield (including striking Robert Green`s woodwork twice) and even earned a standing ovation from all four sides of the ground when substituted late on.

The English game has proved just too physical for Leon, and maybe the little Spaniard will move abroad to find a club that can offer regular first-team football.

Can't say i'll miss him, good set piece taker though.

If he was built like Anderson, I reckon he'd be one of the best midfielders in the league - and possibly capable of Prem quality.
