Barnsley beat Burnley on Boxing Day

Barnsley beat Burnley on Boxing Day

Barnsley battled for maximum points against Burnley on Boxing day at Turf Moor.

Jamie Cureton opened his Reds account along with a lucky strike from Campbell-Ryce, enabling the Reds to have a very merry Christmas week indeed.

Hugo COlace returned from suspension but had to settle for a place on the bench, the same went for Dennis Souza who battled back from a calf-strain to be amongst the substitutes.

It was a sticky start to the match as neither side grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck in the opening few minutes.

Barnsley did threaten early on through former Claret, Stephen Foster, glancing a couple of headers just over Jensen`s bar. One of which went particularly close with the big Dane left stranded.

The Reds broke the deadlock on six minutes thanks to a neat strike from on-loan Jamie Cureton. Cureton was found my Bobby Hassell`s clever pass from midfield, and the striker nestled his drive into Jensen`s bottom right-hand corner.

Barnsley were keeping the ball extremely well in a tight midfield, with some great one-touch passing and flicks on show from Anderson, Hassell and Leon.

Cureton was in on goal again a couple of minutes later but was denied by an excellent intervention challenge from the big centre-half, Clark Carlisle.

Stephen Caldwell was the first to worry the Reds but his header dropped over the top of Muller`s bar. Chris McCann felt he should have been awarded a penalty on eighteen minutes as he went down under Kozluk`s challenge.

Heinz Muller was properly tested on thirty-three minutes, doing well to block Blake`s wicked 25-yard free-kick.

Blake did cause another problem for the Reds, turning Darren Moore on the right-wing before putting the ball on a plate for Chris McCann to fire home on thirty-eight minutes.

Burnley were finally alive and saw chances from Eagles and McCann fly over from distance. But Eagles really should have sent his side into the lead but somehow poked wide from four yards in front of an empty net after Paterson tricked his way into the box.

The Reds started the second half similar to the first, with a tight-nit midfield. Campbell-Ryce burst in on goal only to be denied by the outstretched leg of Jensen after a great through-ball from Cureton.

Blake saw his effort blaze over after a great cross from Paterson before the Reds went into the lead on sixty-eight minutes.

Kozluk`s free-kick eventually found Campbell-Ryce in the Burnley box, the tricky Jamaican wormed his way closer to goal before firing in after a deflection off Caldwell. Jamal will definitely be claiming his seventh goal of the season after Simon Whaley`s effort in the reverse fixture at Oakwell was also recently declared his.

Burnley were ragged and definitely having an 'off-day` with some sloppy passing and lack of creativity.

The fourth official had indicated a minimum of five minutes of stoppage time, giving Chris Eagles a chance to fire his free kick at Muller. But the former Sheffield Wednesday loanee blazed well over to disappoint an expectant Lancashire crowd.

Barnsley have little time to rest and enjoy their six points from two games as they face Lancashire opposition for the second time in three days with the impending visit of Preston North End to Oakwell.
