Hume helpless as Canada go out

Canada failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in the early hours of this morning after a 3-1 defeat to Honduras.

The defeat at the Metropolitan Olympic Stadium in San Pedro Sula, was the third out of four games for Dale Mitchell's team, who haven't qualified for the World Cup Finals since Mexico, 1986.

However, Barnsley striker Iain Hume did play a part in the solitary goal for the Canucks. Hume's 52nd minute free-kick found the head of Rob Friend which then cannoned off the bar before deflecting in off the thigh of Andrew Hainault.

This equaliser came after Honduras took the lead thanks to Walter Martinez, but the Canadians were only on level terms for eight minutes.

A rocket of a strike from Carlo Costly on the hour mark and a stoppage time sealer from Hendrik Thomas ensured Honduras took all the points.

Canada's home-tie with Mexico on Wednesday is now meaningless, so hopefully Iain Hume will come through the game unscathed and ready for Barnsley's trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
