Barnsley to bid for O`Brien?

Sources in Scotland claim that Barnsley are in a race to sign Irish international Alan O`Brien from Hibernian.

The left-sided midfielder joined Hibs from Newcastle Utd in the summer of 2007 after the Scottish Premier League Club paid the Magpies around 350,000 in compensation for the speedy winger.

Twenty three year old O`Brien has five Irish caps to his name and seems a reasonable target for the reds after club owner Patrick Cryne claimed the tykes need to invest in a 'natural left-sided midfielder`.

However it seems that the reds have stiff competition in the race to sign O`Brien as newly promoted Swansea City appear to be interested.

One thing is for sure that Hibs will not let O`Brien leave Easter road without a hefty price being agreed, although the SPL club may be willing to let O`Brien leave after he was allowed to move to Crewe on loan back in January but the deal never came off.
