On Sunday 10th of May 1998, Barnsley graced the Oakwell turf in the last game of their tremendous yet disappointing Premier League season.
Having already been relegated the previous week at Filbert Street, Barnsley faced a Man United side filled with international superstars as the curtain fell on the final day of the 97/98 season. Such players included Andrew Coal, Teddy Sheringham, David Beckham and Peter Schmeichel.
Although the reds were sunk by two goals from Andrew Cole and Teddy Sheringham, at the end of the game club mascot Toby Tyke took to pitch and performed the Full Monty - nothing was going to stop the Barnsley faithful celebrate their first season in the top flight of English football.
As for the front of Barnsley`s official matchday programme, the 'Oakwell Review`, appeared a young boy sporting his red colours. That young boy is now the writer for Barnsley`s news on Vitalfootball, my how those ten years have flown…
On the front of the programme alongside that young boy, appeared the phrase "we`ll be back". Maybe the 'ten year curse` has now been lifted and Barnsley can once again push towards some more glory days in the Premier League!
